Sewer Expansion Reduces Pollution
Suffolk County initiates a plan to expand its infrastructure of sewer systems. The county administered the Suffolk County Subwatersheds Wastewater Plan in 2020. The data found that the lack of sewers is responsible for the surplus nitrogen load, and Long Island’s affordable housing crisis. Multi-family complexes can only be constructed if they have systems that can effectively and safely discharge wastewater. The Water Quality Restoration Fund is supporting this initiative, making this possible as correcting the Suffolk County sewer systems was never able to be pursued in the past due to the lack of funding. Additionally, the innovation of low-pressure sewer technology is less costly.
