Our Team

RAY ANTAYA, President

As ECI’s Founder and President, Ray has been immersed in earthwork technology for over two decades. A graduate of Bridgewater State University, Ray entered the construction industry with hands-on positions such as Site Foreman, Field Engineer, Project Manager, and Superintendent. Ray’s vision for greater use of technology in the construction industry led him to pursue additional civil engineering coursework from the University of Massachusetts’ Civil Engineering Department and Wentworth Institute of Technology’s Construction Management program. This education inspired him to establish ECI Technologies, one of the industry’s first CAD-based consulting companies to serve the construction industry. Ray’s passion is helping project managers, superintendents, and construction companies utilize and optimize data to improve their own workflow and bottom line. In this spirit, everyone on the ECI team is committed to ongoing client training, communication, service, and always thinking about the future!

JOSHUA SCHERRER, Virtual Construction Engineer

Growing up in his family’s heavy civil construction company, Josh spent most of his youth working dozers, scrapers and other heavy equipment. His love of construction led him to earn his B.A. in Construction Management from Dordt University, providing him with a strong Civil background. After graduation, he managed civil projects for the family business. Early on in his career, Josh was drawn to the potential of digital technology in civil construction. He propelled the family business to adopt numerous Automated Machine Guidance Systems. He is also a Certified Expert in Trimble Business Center which he utilizes with a portfolio of other civil software to build models, cut and fill analyses, alignments, and take-offs. Josh joined ECI in 2020, bringing with him significant hands-on knowledge of utilizing AMG on the construction site and Trimble Business Center.

NATASHA SANTIAGO, Virtual Construction Engineer

Natasha holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez, with a Certificate in Environmental Engineering. She is also fluent in three languages (English, Spanish and French)! Natasha came to ECI as a field engineer, working with both Topcon and Trimble equipment. She has hands-on fieldwork experience and the desire and ability to bridge knowledge and “connect dots” between digital plans and the work going on at construction sites. Having worked in a larger corporate environment, Natasha was attracted to ECI’s entrepreneurial spirit and vision for the future of civil construction. She’s excited to join the ECI Team and help ECI’s clients get the most out of their GPS equipment.

KEITH KLINGENSMITH, Virtual Construction Engineer

Keith is a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) and Penn State University graduate, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. Being raised by a family of machinists and a grandfather who was a homebuilder gave him an early start in the construction industry. Most days after his high school football practice, he could be found on the construction site moving concrete blocks, carrying shingles, or installing insulation into the walls. Having worked for a general contractor, a top retailer of construction positioning products and solutions, and the Penn DOT, Keith’s skills and experience positioned him well for our growing team. Keith has built a solid career in the heavy civil industry and joined ECI as a Virtual Construction Engineer in February 2022.

FAQs

What is a Digital Terrain Model (DTM)?

Essentially, a Digital Terrain Model (DTM) is the data that can be uploaded into the GPS equipment contained within a bulldozer, excavator, grader or other earthwork equipment. This enables a company to quickly and precisely build a site. Also called TIN (Triangulated Irregular Network), MCM (Machine Control Model), surface, or tri-faces, DTMs are loaded into GPS handheld devices for various dirt work and/or staking.

Who needs a DTM?

Anybody who performs earthwork with GPS-equipped construction machines will need a DTM to complete the work. In addition, anyone who uses GPS rovers for field staking can benefit from DTMs.

Is a Digital Terrain Model the same thing as a takeoff?

No! Basically, a takeoff is a count or estimate of the amount of material needed to go into a project. In earthwork, a dirt quantity takeoff provides dirt numbers for a site based on the construction plans. Takeoffs are a great tool to assist the client in making a knowledgeable bid because they know all of the quantities associated with the project.

Can a Takeoff Model be used as a Digital Terrain Model?

In most cases, no. The process for creating a takeoff model is different than a machine control model. The takeoff model is a representation of existing conditions vs. the proposed design to estimate the job. It doesn’t contain the necessary detail to complete a project. The DTM is an extremely detailed process. Be wary: anyone who tells you that takeoff models work for the field is inaccurate! Machine control models are still required to accurately build a site per the construction plans.

Do you build DTMs for all major machine control systems?

Our digital files are compatible with a range of machine control systems, including top brands such as TopCon, Trimble, Carlson, and Leica.

How much experience does your company have?

We have been in the business since 2009, and are one of the foremost digital modeling companies in the United States. Our CEO, Ray Antaya, and on-staff engineers have spent decades in the industry, with experience encompassing both hands-on and instructor-based roles. ECI has developed a 4-Step Process that ensures accuracy, timeliness, and consistency.

How much do your models cost?

When quoting a job, we base our prices on the complexity and the size of the project. Very small, but very complex projects may quote for as much or more than very large-scale but very simple projects. We always try to stick to our original quote unless the scope of the project changes at the client’s direction, and we’ll work with our clients to make the project as affordable as possible. Perhaps most importantly, our models allow the project to be as precise and accurate as possible, saving the client both time and money.
